WOOD FENCING
A wood fence is an excellent choice for both security and privacy. A traditional wooden privacy fence is typically built using 4" x 4" x 8' treated pine wood posts set 30" deep in concrete footings on 7' centers. This really gives D&C an edge as most of our competitors set their posts on 8' centers 24" deep in concrete. D&C installs as standard 2-2" x 4" treated horizontal rails to nail pickets to. After rails are installed D&C will install typical 1" x 6" x 6' wood dog eared pickets to new posts and rails for a finished wood privacy fence. With typical wooden fences there are a huge array of options and styles. Below we will do our best to cover a few of these.
Wood Fence Options
Skirt Board
This is one of the most common options added to our wood fences. A skirt board is a board that is installed at the bottom of a new wood fence that adds height as well as keeps your bigger investment, the pickets, off the ground which helps to prevent future rot at the bottom of your pickets. All different sizes of skirt boards may be used but typically they are always treated pine. The most standard is a 1" x 6" x 14' long board for an extra 6" of height. Another fairly common skirt board option is when customers desire a 7' height D&C can add a 1" x 12" x 14' treated skirt board or 2-1" x 6" x 14' skirt boards on top of one another. With this taller option as standard policy D&C automatically upgrades their posts to using 4" x 4" x 10' long treated posts in order to accommodate new height and will change post depth from 30" to 36" deep in concrete footings. This is done in order to have more strength due to the added height and wind load. On wooden fencing, some other skirt boards we have used in the past are 2" x 6" and 2" x 12" along with 2" x 8" and 2" x 10" of course all treated lumber. Please let us know if you would like this option and we would be glad to add it to your fence estimate.
Third 2”x4” Rail
This option has been prevalent on most all fences D&C installs. We love to add a middle 2"x 4" treated rail to all our wood fences. The wonderful thing about adding this middle rail is that it adds very little cost of the fence. It does, however, add great strength in supporting your pickets in the middle, keeps the pickets from bowing and warping as much, and adds to the value of the fence. This is an excellent option and we highly recommend adding a 3rd middle rail to all wooden fences.
Cedar vs Treated Pine Pickets
This is an age-old question, which pickets should I use on my new wood fence and which is better. If only D&C Fence could count the times folks have asked this question. The bottom line on the answer is just preference. You will find different opinions based on who you ask about the best wood fence. We believe both woods have about the same life expectancy. They both have a completely different finished look. Cedar has more of the orange to reddish appearance and treated pine has a greenish tint. Over time both cedar and treated pine fade to grey in color. Are there other differences? In our opinion, the other issue to consider is the degree of warping. Treated pine pickets tend to warp dramatically more than cedar. A cedar board will stay straight for a longer period of time. The standard for both pickets is dog eared in shape and come in at 6' tall. Please note that D&C Fence Co. offers two different sizes of wood pickets. Both the 1"x 6" and 1"x 4" pickets have a great looking result.

Customizing Your Wooden Fence
Add a personal touch to your fence. We can handle a variety of custom fence styles. Let us know what you have in mind and we will do our best to make it a reality. Some typical customer designs are as follows:
Cap and Trim
Cap and Trim is a great design for a new wood fence. It adds a lot of strength as well as a sophisticated custom look. In general, with a cap and trim wood fence, D&C uses 10' long 4"x 4" treated posts set in concrete footings and 3-2"x 4" treated pine horizontal rails. For the custom look, D&C adds a 2"x 6" treated pine top cap flat on top of the new fence and trims out the dog ears with a 1”x 2” trim board.

Double Drive Gates
In essence, double drive gates are two separate gates for one opening.
Double Drive wood gates are commonly used when large items need to pass through the gates. Many customers with a boat, RV, ATV, etc. opt for this type of gate to have easy access. The standard opening for a double drive wood gate is anywhere from an 8' to 10' opening. D&C builds these gates to the same specs as the walk gates. Upon request and highly recommended, we can install 6"x6" treated heavy duty wood posts instead of the standard 4”x4” posts. All double drive gates come with heavy duty drop rods to keep gates secured when in the closed position.
Wood Gates with metal frame
How does D&C Fence set apart from other fence companies? We absolutely build the best custom designed metal frame wood gates. When a gate is too large to build all out of wood, we recommend using a heavy-duty galvanized frame gate and attaching wood pickets to this frame. For example, if a double drive gate opening is 13' wide, we will weld two 6'6" wide galvanized metal frames for this opening. Then, set two 6"x 6" treated wood posts, attach pickets on the new metal frames, and hang the gates. This allows for longevity, eliminates the warping, and makes gates far more workable and adjustable.
Motorized Gates
D&C Fence can build and install any type of wood gate with a metal frame on rollers. We can add a gate operator to any of these gates to automatically roll or swing to open/closed.
